BS046 Kyd & Kango: High Above CD (2001)

Raymond Hansen and Jann Marius Dahle aka Kyd & Kango samarbeidet i et knapt år, resultatet ble 15 spor fordelt på 9 12"-ere på selskap som Slip'n'Slide, Influence, Ascension, Estereo og norske Henya Records. "High Above" er en samling av de beste sporene fra disse 12"-erne med hovedvekt på de funky deephouse-sporene, samt det eksklusive bidraget Bugi. Alle i lange og gode full-lengders-versjoner.

Raymond Hansen and Jann Marius Dahle aka Kyd & Kango worked together breafly a year, the result was 15 tracks on 9 12"-ers on labels like Slip'n'Slide, Influence, Ascension, Estereo and the Norwegian Henya Records. "High Above" is a collaboration of the best tracks from the 12"-ers, with weight on the funky deephouse tracks, along with the exclusive track Bugi, all of them in long and glorious full-length-versions.

BS044 Kolar Goi: Space Ballad 12" (2001)

Kolar Goi er Gaute Barlindhaug sitt nye prosjektnavn, etter at en slem advokat i USA ikke lot han få fortsette å hete Aedena Cycle. Stilmessig fortsetter det i samme gate som forrige Aedena Cycle album, det vil si skjeiv electronica med synkoperte rytmer. Men en tanke mere pop? A-siden er to nye Kolar Goi-spor, men som en link til forhistorien innehloder B-siden to spor fra siste Aedena Cycle-album som omsider blir å finne på vinyl.

Kolar Goi is Gaute Barlindhaugs new alias, after being forced to stop using the Aedena Cycle name by a US lawyer. The style continues where the last Aedena Cycle left, that is, strange electronica with his trademarked syncopated rhythms. And with a slightly more poppy edge.The A-side is two new Kolar Goi-tracks, and as a link back to his previous alias, to tracks from the last Aedena Cycle CD are now finally on vinyl on the B-side.

Arctic Circles-serien er en annenhver-årlig status på det som rører seg av norsk downtempo, electronica og ambient. Arctic Circles 3 er en variert meny, håndplukket og nennsomt satt sammen av Beatservice-sjefen Vidar Hanssen. Inneholder bidrag fra bla Röyksopp, Xploding Plastix, Slowpho, Flunk and Kim Hiorthøy.

The Arctic Circles series is s bi-annual tour-de-force of the current Norwegian downtempo, electronica and ambient scenes. Arctic Circles 3 is a varied menu, handpicked and thoughtfully sequenced by the Beatservice-boss Vidar Hanssen. Includes contributions from a.o. Röyksopp, Xploding Plastix, Slowpho, Flunk and Kim Hiorthøy.

BS042 Slowpho: Dial 12" (2001)

Slowpho er Hilde Drange fra Bergen og Christian Watkins fra Kristiansand. De lager musikk i grenselandet mellom ny elektronikk i form av drum'n'bass og downtempo/triphop, og mere jazza elementer i form av "live" improviseringer fra studiomusikere og ikke minst Hildes jazza vokal. Dial er deres andre 12", og låten har allerede hatt høy rotasjon på nærradio i Buenos Aires(!), hvor Slowpho har en stor fan-skare. Bonus-sporet er den funky I Wake Myself, mens hovedlåta Dial har fått henholdsvis en house og en heftig drum'n'bass remix på b-siden.

Slowpho is Hilde Drange and Christian Watkins. They make music in the nu jazz style, in the borderlines between downtempo, drum'n'bass, and live improvisations from studio-musicians and Hildes jazzy vocals. Dial is their second 12", and the track have already had high rotation on local radios in Buenos Aires(!), where Slowpho have a big fan-base. The bonus-track is the funky I Wake Myself, while the main track Dial has been given a house and a drum'n'bass remix treatment on the b-side.

BS023 Sternklang: Neolounge CD (1999)

Endelig er den her, oppfølgeren til Sternklang's legendariske debutalbum "Freestylespacefunk". Fortsatt er det jazzete og funky instrumental hip-hop det dreier seg om, men på "Neolounge" er det enda mere funky og til tider et 70-talls detektime-preg. Albumet har blitt (om mulig) enda mere helstøpt enn debuten. I en begrenset periode er den tilgjengelig til en hyggelig introduksjons-pris!

Finally, here's the awaited follow-up to Sternklang's legendary "Freesylespacefunk" album. It is still the jazzy and funky instrumental hip-hop that we all loved on "Freestyle...", but now it's even more funky, sometimes with a 70's b-movie sound. "Neolounge" is (if possible) even more solid and coherent than the debut.

BS024 Aedena Cycle: Cargo Cult CD (1999)

Aedena Cycle sitt andre album er et kvantesprang vidre fra debuten, med en vidreutvikling av de sofistikerte lyd-landskapene. En fot er plantet i Detroit og den andre solid plantet i den arktiske ambient-tradisjonen, og hele tiden med Gautes karakteristiske synkoperte rytme-strukturer og jazz-feel. I tillegg til elektronikken inneholder albumet også gjeste-opptredener på gitar, vibrafon og cello.

Aedena Cycle's second album is a quantum leap forward from the debut, with a further development of the sofisticated soundscapes. One foot is in Detroit, and the other foot is firmly planted in the arctic ambient tradition, and all the time with Gaute's characteristic syncopated rhythm-structures and jazz-feel. In adition to the electronics, the album includes guest musicians on guitar, vibraphone and cello.

BS025 Various: Arctic Circles 2 CD (1999)

I likhet med den første fra 1997 (BS015), består "Arctic Circles 2" hovedsakelig av electronica og lyttbar technologi. Men denne gangen er ikke fokuset like sterkt på det arktiske og kjølige. "Arctic Circles 2" gjenspeiler den utviklingen som har skjedd på den norske elektroniske fronten, og har fått en varmere og mer groovy sound. Men fortsatt med hovedvekt på det tilbakelente.

Like the first one from 1997 (BS015), "Arctic Circles 2" also deals with downtempo electronica aimed more at the sofa than at the dancefloor. But the focus is not that strong on the arctic and cold soundscapes. "Arctic Circles 2" mirrors the development on the norwegian electronic scene the last years, and has got a warmer and more groovy sound. But still with a mainly laidback focus.

BS026 Circular: Divergent CD (1999)

"Divergent" er et gjennomarbeidet og helhetlig, nærmest et konseptuelt album. De ønsket med dette albumet å lage en skikkelig "chill-out" plate der de tok ned selve uttrykket og samtidig kunne våge å være eksperimentelle. Den inneholder referanser til og tilbakeblikk på 90-tallets store artister som Biosphere, Aphex Twin, Autechre, FSOL, Namlook og Global Communication, og er en respektfull hyllest til den "klassiske" ambiente stilen.

"Divergent" is coherent and solid, almost a conceptual album. Their goal was to make a genuin "chill-out" record with a toned down expression, but at the same time experimental. It contains references to the great ambient artists of the 90's like Biosphere, Aphex Twin, Autechre, FSOL, Namlook and Global Communication, and is a respectful tribute to the "classic" ambient style.

BS027 Motion Control: Real Thing 12" (2000)

BS029 Motion Control: Groove Tool CD (2000)

På Motion Control's egentlige debutalbum blandes Detroit-soundet fra "Digits" med impulser fra fransk house, 70-talls disco, 80-talls electro og en god posjon detektime-dramatikk. Albumet inneholder alle de tradisjonelle godbitene - hør f.eks. vocoder og sparsomme electro-komp på tittelsporet, rhodes-piano og nydelig vokal på "Nightcap", drivende wahwah-gitarer på "L'estetique de bass", og frosker og bordtennis på Glossy Rubber".

On the "proper" debut album from Motion Control, the Detroit-sound from "Digits" is mixed with impulses from french house, 70's disco and 80's electro. The album contains all the traditional goodies - like vocoder and sparse electro-groove on the title track, rhodes-piano and beautiful vocals on "Nightcap", wahwah-guitars on "L'estetique de bass", plus frogs and table tennis on "Glossy Rubber".

BS030 Information: Successor CD (2000)

20-siders knall-fet booklet! 99 spor! Information har sluppet et meget ambisiøst verk, fragmentarisk men likevel en helhet. Varierer fra "found sounds" via ambient og electronica til beats og house/techno-rytmer. Mye å fordøye, kan spilles sekvensielt, men skal helst nytes på random.

BS032 Upper Rooms: Video Bambino LP/CD (2000)

Upper Rooms aka Isak Anderssen er klassisk skolert cellist, men under navnet Upper Rooms leverer han saker inspirert av den tyske electro scenen, åttitalls synth pop, samt Rephlex og Warp utgivelser. Upper Rooms jobber med det enkle og umiddelbare, til tider naivistisk, men alltid med en solid base i det melodiske. Albumet er tilgjengelig både på CD og (enkel) LP, med eksklusive spor på begge formatene.

Upper Rooms aka Isak Anderssen is a classical trained cello player, but Upper Rooms is in quite a different corner of the musical spectre. This project is inspired by a.o the german electro scene, eighties synth pop, plus Rephlex and Warp releases. Upper Rooms deals with the simple and the immediate, at times naivistic, but always with a firm base in melody. The debut album is availiable both as CD and (single) LP, with exclusive tracks on each format.

BS036 The Athome Project: Heaven & Hell 7" (2001)

The Athome Project debuterte med brask og bram i fjor med 10"-eren Fjord EP på Groovecentral Recordings, senere re-utgitt i desember på tyske Stereo Deluxe i en litt omarbeidet versjon. Denne 7"-eren inneholder to versjoner av Heaven & Hell, en cool downtempo/triphop-låt med deilig jazza sax-tema. Versjonen på b-sida inneholder samplinger fra en viss anti-dop-film fra 60-tallet...

The Athome Project released his debut 10" Fjord EP on Groovecentral Recordings in the spring of 2000, re-released by the German label Stereo Deluxe in December in a slightly re-worked version. This limited 7" contains two versions of Heaven & Hell, a cool and jazzy downtempo track. The b-side contains samples from a Norwegian anti-drug movie from the 60's.

Resulatet er i samme landskap som bla Lamb og norske jazz/electronica prosjekt som Krøyt og Wibutee. I tillegg til de to vokalsporene Lovetech og Would You inneholder EP'en drum'n'bass-instrumentalen Fabric og en Groovecentral drum'n'bass-remix av Would You.

BS040 Mind over MIDI: Project 3 CD (2001)

Project 3 fortsetter og videreutvikler stilen fra ICE Acoustik album; det vil si mørk arktisk ambient mikset med Berlin-minimalisme. Albumet gir lytteren et vidt spekter av atmosfæriske lyder, ekko og rytmer. Det er et album spekket med reflekterende stemninger, ambiente frekvenser, hypnotiske rytmer, og det introduserer et nytt element i Mind over MIDI sin sound; vokal. Over halvparten av låtene har vokal fra ulike gjestevokalister: Sidsel Endresen, Anneli Drecker, Stein Bjercke fra Lorenzo, Hilde Drange fra Slowpho og Oddman. I tillegg bidrar Nils Petter Molvær (trompet) og Bugge Wesseltoft (piano).

Project 3 continues with the style from the previous ICE Acoustik album; that is dark arctic ambient mixed with Berlin-minimalism. The album offers the listener a wide range of atmospheric sounds, echoes and rhythms. An album filled with reflective moods, ambient frequencies, hypnotic rhythms, and introducing a new element in Mind over MIDI's sound; vocals. Various guest vocalists are contributing: Norwegian jazz-singer Sidsel Endresen, Anneli Drecker from Bel Canto, Stein Bjercke from indie-rock band Lorenzo, Hilde Drange from Slowpho and Oddman. Other Norwegian jazz musicians contributing are Nils Petter Molvær (trumpet) and Bugge Wesseltoft (piano).
